PC vs Mac?
Acess to a PC (vs a Mac) has opened up new possibilities for exploring and
creating 3D worlds.
Is the PC politically correct?
Much as I like to use the Mac OS, Usoft and Intel are defining popular computing
with desktop Windows and NT,
an abundance of pentium based computers, Dell, Gateway, HP, Olivetti, Red
Box, Viglen, Intergraph -
sound cards, video cards, 3D accelerators, interface cards, and a vast and
complete range of software.
Technology development on the Mac appears to be somewhat lacking:
VRML - a choice of VRML browsers for the PC, 1 or 2 for the Mac (Voyager,
Netscape Atlas (>16MB))
VRML : 3D browsers Cybergate, Internet Explorer, netscape plugins
Faster and an increasing choice of 3D graphics adaptors
(eg S3 Diamond Stealth, apparently about to be in built onto motherboards:
WAVE news item)
3D interface standards such as OpenGL (SGi, NT), Microsoft Direct 3D.
Powerful 3D software: 3D Studio Max, Lightworks, SoftImage..
VRML 2.0 Moving worlds, Iris Inventor , WorldToolKit (PC&SGI)
(I still prefer the Mac Operating System to Windows!) -----
Perhaps the future of the Mac is no longer the machine but simply the OS,
but with Microsoft as the defacto PC standard OS and Windows NT 4.0 around
the corner..
If only Apple had licensed their OS all those years ago...
